Series: Araneae Nation, book #1

Stars: 3

AUTHOR:  A Hint of Frost is Book (one) of the Araneae Nation series.  By my count, author Hailey Edwards has written a total of (7) books.  Some Native American tribal traditions were used as an inspiration to the writing of this book.

GENRE: Paranormal, Contemporary fiction, Fantasy

SETTING: City of Erania and home of the Araneidae clan.

CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTER:  Her father was Theridiidae and her mother Araneidae.  As maven, she does not want to spend the traditional time in the spinning room.  Instead her mind is set on seeing that her clan learns to protect themselves and not depend on others to provide that protection.

CENTRAL MALE CHARACTER:  He is the son of the Mimetidae maven.  Warrior trained, he vows to be partisan and as such, his greatest acts are to protect the Araneidae maven by any means necessary.

SYNOPSIS:  The Theridiidae have become betrayers.  The maven of the Araneidae clan has no other choice but to turn to her mother’s best friend and maven of the Mimetidae clan for protection.  But, there is a price to pay.

PARANORMAL:   Many clans exist in this world and each with their own characteristics.  Some live with purpose.  Some have a need for blood.  Some are flesh eaters.  Some commune with nature.

CONTEMPORARY fiction:   This book is not so much “romance” as it is “contemporary paranormal”.  Otherworldly in their own modern day time.

WHAT I LIKED:  The protectiveness of the central male character towards the central female character.  Most women only dream of such a man.  Hints of romance without exposing your mouth to a full blown assault of flavors.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE:  I spent over half my time trying to figure out the who and the what.  It took the focus away from action and events.  Am I reading about a clan of insects or humans or vampires or both?  A reference page stating the essence and name of each clan would have been helpful.
